Do you have the apt mindset to feel motivated?

“Find your why, motivation will follow you itself”

Motivation in layman terms means ‘a reason for acting/behaving in a particular way’. Wait, what? Isn’t motivation about studying 12 hours a day, cracking UPSC, topping JEE exams and becoming the next Jeff Bezos? That’s one way of how motivation is sold to you, my infants. A part of motivation might have to do with the nuances I listed above. But overall, motivation has nothing to do with achievements. One reason I say it is because most of the achievements that you attach yourself to today are materialistic and once you have achieved them – Your motivation goes downhill

Motivation is about mindset, but that mindset has to be constructive. Whether you triumph or you face defeat, it’s your mindset that will make the change.

Great leaders are the outcome of repeated failure:

Pick any successful person from your surroundings. You will find a common notion among them. They all love failures much more than they love success. Don’t get me wrong here though, they don’t love to fail, what they love are the learnings that they acquire from failures. They lose motivation as well, but its the mindset that uplifts them again. They are then once again motivated to pursue their goals and vision they have.

Your circumstances are not the hardest:

I would like to share a story of someone with you. I admire him, with all my heart.
In early childhood, this man failed primary school, TWICE.
In middle school, he failed, THRICE.
When he applied for jobs, he failed 30 times.
When KFC was new to his country, out of 24 candidates, 23 were selected, he was the only one to face rejection.
Though he overcame all his failures and now he is one officially the richest man of China.
This man is known as Jack Ma.

There is no other story of any other person which fills me with perseverance the way Jack Ma does. From facing rejections and setbacks to set up one of the largest e-commerce companies on earth, this man is the personification of absolute diligence.
What makes Jack Ma so special? It’s his mindset and conscientiousness.

You come across failures as well but you succumb to it so easily. Have you ever questioned yourself WHY?

Motivation and mindset go hand in hand:

I have discussed it above. What makes you distinct and predicate whether you will succeed or not is your mindset. In this section, I will discuss two types of mindset people tend to fall in including me and you. These mindsets are as following:
Victor Mindset
Victim Mindset
As the title suggests, you might have got an idea. Let us discuss them in detail.

Mindset of a Victor:

“Victory belongs to the most persevering” – Napoleon Bonaparte

‘I am whole, I am complete. God has plans for me that’s why it is an opportunity’. These are some common phrases in the dictionary of a victor

You need the motivation to overcome and failures and achieve a certain set of goals that you have set for yourself. The victor will have an optimistic outlook with everything that happens in his life. A classic example I gave you above is Jack Ma. The only thing that victor does better than a victim is in embracing his losses and turning them into his strength.
One reason why Victor’s mindset doesn’t come naturally to you is that you set unrealistic and unprecedented aim. It is a handy practice to aim high, but it is equally important to know the ground on which you stand and then making incremental changes. Success is a repetition of small actions taken every day.

I will discuss goal setting and routine in the later part of the blog. For now, let us discuss the mindset of a victim. A mindset evident among masses.

Mindset of a Victim:

“Every victor was a victim to his self-imposed misery”

‘I can not do it. It is too tough. God, why always me? I will do it tomorrow’. These are some common phrases in the dictionary of a victim.

Victim accepts defeat even before trying. Even if he tries following a routine, he gives up in a day or week. There are many altercations of being a victim but do you know what is common among them all? Pessimism and a negative perspective towards life. Pessimism isn’t only toxic for you, but for your work environment, society and your nation as well.
I want you to do something. Take a look around yourself whenever you are in a social setting. It would be easy to spot out people who have all sorts of problems with the world. Little do they know – It is their mindset which is at fault here. No matter how much you blame the whole world for whatever has been done wrong to you. The world moves on and so should you.
There is a cure for diseases present in your body. But there is no cure for the poison you craft in your head. No medicines and prescriptions would be able to solve it. You have to take a hold of your brain and steer it towards positivity.

It sounds tough. You can not radically undergo a transformation from being pessimistic to optimistic. I am here to guide you but be warned, you have to have patience.

From caterpillar to a butterfly:

// The butterfly represents the talent
The thoughtfulness and the beauty within the caterpillar
But having such a harsh outlook on life
The caterpillar sees the butterfly as weak……
Although the butterfly and caterpillar are completely different
They are one and the same //

This poem by Kendrick Lamar beautifully encapsulates the struggle between the victim and the victor. So, how to transform from a caterpillar to a butterfly. In other words, from victim to a victor.

It is really easy. Here is a practical roadmap to sustain your motivation in the long run:

Surround yourself with positive people and positive content
Make a realistic goal
Divide your goals on the basis of time and longevity i.e. short term goals and long term goals
Structure a time table – This is nothing new but the way I ask you to do it will completely be. Structure and routine your daily life in an equitable manner. Keep it pragmatic. If your maximum capacity to study is an hour, so be it, but introduce routine and regularity to it. Make incremental changes weekly and miracles will surely not happen but you will be in a much better place.
Strike a balance between your studies and your recreation.
There are going to be bad days and its completely human. OK, my kid?
Focus on the present and now

Winners do chicken dinner in real life:

I love video games and you must have got the reference I am talking about above. I am eagerly waiting for cyberpunk to release. But do you end up wasting most of your day playing pubg or any other game? Gaming is not the enemy here, but your lack of control is.
Cut as many distractions possible and you will feel motivated to study, to do work that will shape you and your future towards stability. You can even try making a deal with yourself. For every hour/ whatever parameter is comfortable for you, of study, you will reward yourself with one, just one match of 15-20 minutes. You have to have self-control and accountability.

You will not feel motivated every day:

Just like emotions, your energy and weather, your motivation is meant to change every day as well. Therefore, I emphasize on routine and a structure that will help you overcome your bad days where you don’t feel motivated. The first thing you need to understand is, it is completely normal. The second thing you need to know is, you have to find ways to keep yourself cheered up.
You’ve to be your biggest fan, biggest motivator and love yourself the way you love your mobile phone or your crush.
I know we all have different neuroplastic structures which alter from human to human. However, you can exploit your genetic capping to its maximum potential

I have one more fun way to make you more accountable which I learned from Shwetabh Gangwar.
Put an alarm/reminder on your phone on an hourly basis, yes it has to repeat every hour. Make a small journal as well. Now as this alarm plays, write down what did you do and what are you supposed to do. The interval of every hour is necessary so that even if you are distracted, you will return to your work as your reminder shows up. Following this practice, you become efficient and learn time management. I do this practice daily and my productivity has increased manifold

I have discussed everything that you need to feel motivated and achieve your goals.
Remember, you are whole, you are complete. Great things take time to take off but when they do, its surely a journey to reminisce
